Optimizing your Job Posting

By Sara Parent

Getting the most from your online job ad

You've decided you want your jobs advertised online. You've picked a site to display your ad and now you want to get as many qualified applicants as possible. Here are a few things to remember when placing your ad online.

Be Clear

Make sure it is obvious to the job seeker what the position is. Fancy or non-conventional job titles lead to confusion. Ensure that the job description is clear too. Give as much information as possible so that the applicant knows exactly what is expected of them and what qualifications they should have. Online, you are not limited by space or words the way you are advertising in a newspaper, so take advantage of it. While you are creating your ad, make sure it looks professional and is free of typos, weird fonts, and inconsistent capitalizing of letters. Just as you evaluate an applicant by their resume, online job seekers are judging your company by what the ad looks like.

Be Reachable

Don't forget to add how you want applicants to apply for the position. If you want phone calls only, be prepared to take them. Most companies opt for mail, fax, and email, and that's a great way to provide a wide range of choices for applicants. If you are opting for email, make sure you specify formats. If your company does not accept resumes as file attachments, let applicants know. It will cut down on the work you have to do in evaluating your candidates. If you prefer to receive applications only from those legally eligible to work in Canada, make sure to include that in your posting. Job postings are viewable by the entire online world so qualify your posting.

If you keep in mind the suggestions above, you're likely to have a job ad that attracts the attention of job seekers. And that, after all, is the reason you are advertising online.
